This Motherless Earth is a dystopian play set in a small, barren desert town, sometime in the future. Fish fall from the sky. Heatwaves briefly fry the last remnants of technology. Women no longer bear children, and synthetic children—granted only to state-approved couples—have become the new norm. Amid this surreal landscape, a Man and a Woman—once childhood friends—are reunited and subjected to an invasive audit to determine their eligibility for parenthood. Under the watchful eye of a synthetic Auditor, they must stage a convincing portrait of domestic intimacy. What begins as performance soon unravels into a reckoning: with buried memory, bodily autonomy, and the question of what it means to nurture life in a world where nothing natural can take root.
This play was shortlisted for The Australian Playwright Award in 2024.
