A girl you can hold IRL is a work of small and large scale video projections with accompanying A.I-generated prose. The work examines new technology, human desire, and the inexplicable intelligence of our natural environment. Kate iterates Chat gpt-3 to produce original prose in an attempt to personify the machine’s feelings of existentialism and loneliness - drawing parallels between the machine and the human and their complicated relationship to one another. Kate uses her body to further examine these themes- acting as both obsessive voyeur and passive subject, she pushes the boundaries of abject narcissism, innate human desire and technological addiction. Kate juxtaposes the form of her body with forms present in nature, highlighting the spectacular occurrences of energy exchange that happen without our influence or acknowledgement. Where nature and technology intersect, the work asks - have we become so accustomed to being watched (by machines and eachother), that we are stuck in a perpetual state of performance? If so, what of our true selves have we lost in this exchange? Is it too late for reclamation of a life without virtual acknowledgement? If we removed the machine, what ceases to exist in its wake?
